Steamship Inspection.

We thank you for your telegraphic reply to our letter

of the 8th instant reading as follows:-

"Steamship 'Ixion' in accordance Canada Shipping "Act is liable Canadian inspection. Hongkong "Certificate is not accepted. Forwarding three "copies Act."

The three copies of the Canadian Shipping Act have also come to

hand.

Paragraph 571 provides for reciprocal recognition of

passenger certificates, and such recognition is universally granted by the leading maritime nations of the world. As an

instance of this the U. 3. Goverment give British steamers

exemption from inspection if provided with British passenger

certificates issued either at home or in the colonies. It will

surely create a rather difficult position if the various parts

of the British Empire refuse to recognise each others certifi-

cates, as they are all based on essentially similar legislation.

We feel sure that Messrs. Alfred Holt & Co. will be most sur-

prised at your decision and will wish to refer this matter both

to the Board of Trade and the Colonial Office.

Before we take the matter up with the owners, would

you kindly let us have a copy of the Order, or Departmental

Instruction, under which recognition of other colonial certifi-

cates is henceforth to be refused, stating at the same time whether Board of Trade passenger certificates will or will not be recognised. As the matter is one of urgency we shall appre-

ciate a prompt reply.

Yours faithfully
